Having previously offered an insight into what we expect to be a thrilling Premier League title race, it’s now time to look at the bottom end of the division. Who is destined for relegation heartbreak in the coming Premier League season?
Cardiff City
Relegation odds: 4/6
Last Season: 2nd (Sky Bet Championship)
After being tipped for relegation to the third tier last season, Warnock described Cardiff’s promotion as his greatest achievement in management. However, keeping the Bluebirds in the Premier League will be an even bigger challenge.
Cardiff have spent wisely in pre-season, bringing in several players from the Championship including Bobby Reid and Josh Murphy from Bristol City and Norwich City respectively.
The Welsh side may rue their failure to re-sign Marko Grujic on loan from Liverpool as they look one or two light in midfield.
Huddersfield Town
Relegation odds: 11/10
Last Season: 16th
Huddersfield Town’s debut season in the Premier League will offer tremendous encouragement to fans of Cardiff City. Like Cardiff, Huddersfield were tipped for an immediate return to the Sky Bet Championship after an unlikely promotion. However, manager, David Wagner, assembled a close-knit, industrious squad that adapted perfectly to the top flight.
Now in their second season, Huddersfield have been astute in the transfer market, recruiting seven new players. New £20 million defender, Terence Kongolo, is their costliest recruit so far but the Terriers remain in the market for a centre forward.
Fulham
Relegation odds: 2/1
Last Season: 3rd (Sky Bet Championship)
Fulham received almost unanimous praise for their style of play in last season’s Sky Bet Championship and it will be interesting to see if they can replicate their impressive passing style against opposition of a much higher calibre.
Their pre-season got off to the worst possible start after losing Ryan Fredericks to West Ham United. But, they eased worries of a mass exodus by fighting off interest in their other stars such as Ryan Sessegnon and Tom Cairney.
Aleksandar Mitrovic has made a permanent move to Craven Cottage after an impressive loan spell last season whilst the signing of apparent Arsenal and Chelsea target, Jean Michael Seri, is a major coup.
World Cup winner, Andre Schurrle, will bring a wealth of experience to the squad after completing a two-year loan whilst the acquisitions of Alfie Mawson and Calum Chambers are likely to shore up the defence.
Watford
Relegation odds: 2/1
Last Season: 14th
Watford are now very much an established Premier League side having spent the last three seasons in the top flight. However, their off-field inconsistencies could be their undoing.
Since the Pozzo family acquired Watford in June 2012 the Hornets have seen nine managers come and go. Manager number ten, Javi Gracia, has no previous Premier League experience and the Vicarage Road faithful will hope he can adapt quickly and effectively.
The sale of Richarlison for a massive £50 million will be seen as an excellent piece of business if the money is reinvested into the squad.
Brighton & Hove Albion
Relegation odds: 5/2
Last Season: 15th
Brighton were superb in their debut Premier League season last time out and with the manager, playing style and infrastructure in place, the Seagulls could become a Premier League mainstay.
Manager, Chris Hughton, has overseen a huge recruitment drive since their promotion, with spending now in excess of £120 million.
Long-term target, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, has been brought into the Amex for a club-record £20 million. Meanwhile, the big-money additions of Yves Bissouma (£16.9 million) and Bernardo (£10million) will give Brighton the platform to push for a top ten finish.
Burnley
Relegation odds: 4/1
Last Season: 7th
Burnley were one of the success stories last season after securing an unlikely top seven finish. However, the Turf Moor faithful will be unnerved by a lack of activity in the transfer window.
Ben Gibson, Joe Hart and Matej Vydra have all been drafted in but with a Europa League campaign to contend with, the Clarets may still be a few light.
Bournemouth
Relegation odds: 9/2
Last Season: 12th
Bournemouth survived an early season scare to eventually pull well clear of the bottom three last season but with one of the league’s lowest transfer budget, Eddie Howe’s side will once again be up against it this season.
The Cherries have drafted in three players during the summer and Howe will expect all three to make a major contribution. Jefferson Lerma and Diego Rico have been drafted in from La Liga with the former costing a club-record £28 million. Their third summer signing, Welsh international, David Brooks, looks like a shrewd acquisition and should provide an extra creative edge in the final quarter.
Newcastle United
Relegation odds: 5/1
Last Season: 10th
In simple terms, relegation would be disastrous for Newcastle United. Owner, Mike Ashley, is reluctant to dip into the transfer market whilst trying to offload the club and manager, Rafa Benitez, will not commit his long-term future to the club.
Ashley had promised that all the money raised from player sales would be made available for Benitez to strengthen the first-team squad but despite the big-money departures of the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Mikel Merino, very few players have been drafted in.
Previous loanees, Kenedy and Martin Dubravka have made their moves to St James Park permanent and will be joined in the North East by Yoshinori Muto, Fabian Schar and Ki Sung-Yeung.
Crystal Palace
Relegation odds: 5/1
Last Season: 11th
Roy Hodgson performed a minor miracle when saving Crystal Palace from relegation last season and with a full pre-season under his belt the former England boss could see the Eagles break into the top ten.
The signing of Max Meyer from Schalke represents a major coup for the Londoners whilst Cheick Kouyate has been drafted in from West Ham United.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek impressed on loan from Chelsea last season and will be sorely missed after returning to his parent club. Hodgson’s biggest challenge will be to keep hold of Wilfred Zaha with the Ivorian attracting plenty of interest from Chelsea and Spurs.
