The British and Irish Lions' tour finally looks to be gathering some momentum at just the right time after their comprehensive 34-6 win against The Chiefs in Hamilton leaves the tourists brimming with confidence ahead of the first Test against world champions, New Zealand, set to take place on Saturday.
After a tough start to the tour that included two defeats and two unconvincing wins in their first four games, The Lions finally seem to have settled down in New Zealand with their win against The Chiefs coming just three days since defeating the Maori All Blacks, 32-10.
England winger, Jack Nowell, staked a claim for a Test start by crossing in each half of Tuesday's win in Hamilton. After the game, Nowell, said "We want to come out here and be remembered. We wanted to move the ball about and any try in a Lions shirt means a lot."
The fluidity of the Lions attack is a far cry from the early, scrappy games on tour and several players have done their chances of a Test berth no harm.
Irish hooker, Rory Best, captained The Lions against The Chiefs and after the match Best claimed, "I told the lads before kick-off that if we let this one slip by you'll regret it. We have not been getting the wins but we have been putting ourselves into positions to win and win comfortably. We picked ourselves off the ground and did well. It would have been easy to give away a try in the final stages there but we kept marching forward and to have a tight-head prop make the turn-over in the last three minutes summed it up."
Lions coach, Warren Gatland, caused a stir last week after calling up four Welsh players to provide cover to his injury-hit squad. Gatland insisted the players were nothing more than injury cover and true to his word not one of the Welsh quartet emerged from the bench in Hamilton.
The All Blacks handed The Lions a timely warning ahead of the first Test as they crushed Samoa 78-0 at the weekend. Further cementing their position as favourites for the three-game series.
